Why the Female Lead is De-Clawed When She is Happy?

You can tell we are on a long hiatus from One Tree Hill when I get into philosphical mode. I can't really muse like this on my podcast because, lets face it, I have been accused of my biases.

Yes, it's true. Peyton Sawyer is my favorite character on One Tree Hill. She is my POV and the only reason I stuck with the show while catching up from season one on on DVD starting last February.

I love a strong female character. One that can have a seperate identity but also find way to open up completely to those she loves - especially the man she loves. It took Peyton a while to get there but she made it. It was a long journey, though.

But I also loved that Peyton didn't take any crap. That she conformed, in a way, without losing her individuality. And basically didn't give a damn what people thought about her. Even though I totally disliked sason two, I loved the scene with Peyton when she wore the short bearing the word "Dyke" on her shirt. She knew she wasn't a lesbian. She knew it was a hateful word and others could label her with that manacle but she knew who she was and others be damned.

But I have noticed a tendency with female leads when they finally find their happiness. They seem to get declawed. Maybe it is because of all the male writing or maybe it is because TPTB want to show a softer side.

I guess it really hit me that the Peyton character has been declawed in the last new episode, 616. Here she was trying to be all independent and strong while Lucas was "busy." And not even a snarky smart-ass comment when the director basically called her old when she went to meet Lucas.

Where is the girl that learned to stand up for herself thanks to her brother Derek? Where is the girl that told Lucas she loved him and came back for him? Where is the girl that had the strength to back away from Lucas for his happiness or finally decided to go after what she wanted and write her feelings on the river court?

She is resorted to erasing heart-felt messages off Lucas' voicemail and pretending all is well. She is a ghost of who she was. I am not saying I don't believe in growth. I truly believe in that.

I was a huge hot-head when I was younger. Now, I just kind of go with the flow. And I guess, to an extent, Peyton is doing that as well.

But, I want to see Peyton open up more. Show more fear, more excitement and maybe throw out a biting comment once and a while.

You can be grown-up Peyton but still BE Peyton.

Again, need a new episode.

But on a side note, hustling very hard to get more great interviews for the One Tree Hill Podcst. Had a great interview with Lindsay Wolfington - listeners will love it.

And again, Hilarie Burton, if you happen on this podcast. Steve Goldfried is going to ask you to come on the podcast. Come on, say yes. :)

You too?

because things that bother you when you're miserable, don't bother you when you're happy. simple as that. happinesss and contentment with one's life cause you to cool down and relax and not take things so seriously

Oh,yeah Peyton is definitely my favorite character!!! I watch the show especially because of her, and I really identify with her.

I loved that scene too, because she was standing up for other people and Anna. Saying there is nothing to be ashamed of, and she's not afraid to label herself even when she isn't something. One of my favorite scenes. I kinda miss that Peyton. They changed her into someone who is afraid to be honest with Lucas and how she is feeling. I miss it when she had some edge to her, and was bitchy. That Peyton was bad ass. She put people in there places. :)
